Other Support Available to Help You Live at Home

(The following services are not provided by domiciliary care agencies).

Equipment

If you are having difficulty coping at home, you are advised to contact Somerset Direct on 0845 345 9133. They can discuss your problems and advise you of a wide range of specialist equipment available to help you. You can request an assessment from the Council’s occupational therapy service to identify equipment and adaptations that enable you to live at home. The Occupational Therapy staff will carry out an assessment of need and, if you are eligible for equipment, we will arrange for this to be delivered to you as a free home loan. For those who are ineligible for a service, details of local and national suppliers of equipment can be made available.

The Occupational Therapy staff will advise you if an adaptation to your property would assist you to remain in your own home. They can provide the District Council with a professional recommendation for adaptations on your behalf, which could include large specialist equipment such as stair lifts. However, there is a financial means test for adaptations and you may have to pay towards the costs of the works.

Some equipment is available on loan from various organisations such as Red Cross, your local Age Concern or other organisations.
